We all know that organisations have a hierarchy of business units or departments. However, the data that represents it is often stored in a simple way:

Department ID, Parent Department ID, Department Name

Qlik Sense and QlikView have a special function, called (no surprise) Hierarchy, which makes it very easy to deal with this data.

However, sometimes the department structure changes over time and users want to see this reflected in their reporting. In this case, the Hierarchy function does not work correctly, and we need to take a different approach.
